The 6 Best Unofficial ‘Community’ Reunions You Didn’t Know You Needed

It’s common for actors in beloved sitcoms to work on other projects together, but the Community cast really seems to love one another. Fans may have spent the better part of five years chanting about six seasons and a movie, but before the Greendale Humans appear on the big screen, the small screen has been filled with unofficial reunions. It’s a fans dream.

Some of those reunions are more theoretical than anything else, like the decision to cast Danny Pudi and Jim Rash into two Marvel movies (Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War respectively). Some are a bit more upfront like the time Yvette Nicole Brown interviewed Donald Glover at the Golden Globes. Some are appropriately meta like the decision to cast Joel McHale as Chevy Chase in A Futile and Stupid Gesture. No matter what form they take, they’re all delightful. In honor of the first episode of The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale, it’s time to embrace all of our nerdy Community-loving sides a bit. Here are some of the best unofficial reunions to appear on TV after the cancellation of arguably one of the best sitcoms of all time.

1

'The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale' Season 1, Episode 1

Technically the first episode of Joel McHale‘s new show is called “Pickler, Pebbles, Pillows, and Priestley”, but it should really be named “That Time Netflix Joked About Employing Every Former Community Actor.” While walking through Netflix’s offices, McHale comes across a coffee shop where Alison Brie and Jim Rash are hanging out. Sadly, Gillian Jacobs only gets a shout out, but to be fair missing the unofficial Community reunion feels like a very Britta thing to do.

'Dr. Ken' Season 2, Episode 22

There were a lot of bad things about Dr. Ken, but its finale was not one of them. The Ken Jeong comedy was based off of Jeong’s real-life story about leaving his medical job to become an actor, so it just makes sense that the Community actor would end his sitcom in the most meta way possible. In “Ken’s Big Audition”, Jeong’s character finally decides to leave his job to audition for a show about a community college. His character is supposed to have only one episode before getting hit by a bus — a very Community premise — but Dr. Ken makes it count. Seeing Dan Harmon as a TV producer slightly disinterested in his own show and Alison Brie freaking out around Jeong brings back meta memories.

'Rick and Morty' Season 3, Episode 4

We’ve got a Gillian Jacobs and Dan Harmon crossover here. In “Vindicators 3: Revenge of the Worldender” Jacobs plays Supernova, an all-powerful superhero who gets caught in a steamy love triangle with a pile of ants and a man who controls ghost trains. Rick and Morty is a weird show. Instead of mocking fun at her quirky side, this Rick and Morty episode lets her be the hardcore hero Britta always wanted to be.

'HarmonQuest' Season 2, Episode 1

It’s a weird thing to write, but watching Dan Harmon and his celebrity friends play Dungeons and Dragons is so much fun. Gillian Jacobs turns up to play again in “The Quest Continues”, and from the very beginning it’s clear that she knows nothing about this game and has next to no interest in learning. However, that doesn’t stop her from embracing her unhinged side.

'Rick and Morty' Season 1, Episode 3

There are a lot of Community cameos scattered throughout Rick and Morty, but this early one is one of the best. John Oliver, who played the worst psychology professor Greendale ever saw, guest stars as Dr. Xenon Bloom, a mass of cells in charge of running Anatomy Park. Harmon has always embraced the balance of Oliver’s holier-than-thou strengths and his comedy chops, and this cameo doesn’t disappoint.

'Dr. Ken' Season 1, Episode 14

Altogether, there were four Community-esque reunion episodes on Dr. Ken, but only two of them featured multiple cast members. In “Dave’s Valentine”, Joel McHale plays a sleazy lawyer who once tried to sue Dave (Albert Tsai), and Danny Pudi plays the too-cool Topher. One of the most delightful parts of the Community cast appearances on Dr. Ken is that they’re all essentially playing themselves, though Pudi’s Topher was like Abed on one of his cooler days. Overall, Dr. Ken was a pretty bad show, but those cameos held up.
