When Does ‘Black Panther’ Hit Netflix?

The king has arrived.

After opening on Friday, Black Panther has absolutely dominated not just pop culture, but culture itself. The film, the first big budget movie starring a black comic book superhero since the Blade trilogy wrapped, is a welcome, needed, and long overdue addition to the Marvel franchise. Forget the haters, this is a movie that is so good that two kids pulled a classic (and totally implausible) cartoon stunt in order to score tickets.

But seeing as how, like, every screening of the film was sold out for four days straight, you’re probably wondering when you’ll be able to enjoy Black Panther in the comfort of your own home. Specifically, when will you be able to stream Black Panther on Netflix?

First, if you want to see this movie, you really gotta see it on a big screen with a crowd. It’s an experience. And if you’re eager to see it now, do you really wanna wait months to watch it at home? But if there’s just a lot going on with you right now (no judgement, there’s just a lot going on period), here’s how long you’ll have to wait to see the film at home.

Right now, Netflix has a deal with Disney that grants the streaming service the rights to their movies. So we know that Black Panther will arrive on Netflix at some point–the question is when? Using previous MCU movies Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as a guideline, an average of 218 days have passed between the film’s release in theaters and its arrival on Netflix.

So with that information in mind, that means that it’s possible that Black Panther will hit Netflix either in late September or early October, 2018. If you wanna get more specific, 218 days from Black Panther’s opening day is September 22, 2018. Mark your calendars and set your alarms!

And then there’s the whole hullabaloo with Disney’s upcoming streaming service, which will most likely pull all of those Disney movies off of Netflix once it launches–in 2019. The current Netflix/Disney deal is still applicable to all of Disney’s 2018 releases.  As far as we know, that should not affect Black Panther, a movie released in 2018 that will most likely hit Netflix in 2018. Whether or not you will be able to watch Black Panther on Netflix in 2019 remains unknown–but come on, you have to see Black Panther this year! Do not wait until 2019!
