Stream It Or Skip It: 'The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live' On AMC, Where Rick And Michonne Try To Find Their Way Back To Each Other
If you’re like me (or are me, in which case: hello), you’ve watched The Walking Dead‘s Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) grow up before your very eyes. The actor had only appeared twice before on screen, in the movie Get Low and the TV film The Wronged Man when he was cast as Carl. At the time, it wasn’t clear whether The Walking Dead would be anything… It was based on a popular comic book, but AMC only had Breaking Bad and Mad Men under their belt, and no one knew if a zombie drama could pair at all with the two critically acclaimed but ratings challenged prestige shows.
So at age 10, taking a chance on a pilot with some good actors and behind the scenes talent probably seemed like a fine thing to do. Cut to nine years later (Riggs was cast in 2009, though the show didn’t premiere until 2010), and even with flagging rating TWD is one of the biggest hits in the history of television. Riggs is know known all over the world, and as beloved, if not more so, than his comic book counterpart.
But, as they say, all good things must come to an end: in the Season 8 winter finale, it was revealed that Carl had been bitten by a zombie; and Sunday’s (February 25) midseason premiere sends off Carl, ostensibly for good.
In honor of Riggs’ tremendous work on the show, and the fact that it’s much more impactful to look through a gallery than slowly watch a human grow up in real time, check out a look above at Carl Grimes: from the very first press photo; to the last still from his final episode.
