‘The Lesbian Little Mermaid’ Is Going To Piss Disney Off So Hard

UPDATE: The Lesbian Little Mermaid has been removed from Amazon, and is no longer available for viewing. Decider has reached out for comment.

Life is all about balance. Night follows day. Good cannot exist without evil. And though streaming has led to some of the greatest shows and movies to ever grace the world of entertainment, it has also given us flaming garbage fires. The Lesbian Little Mermaid firmly falls into that latter category.

The Lesbian Little Mermaid is a Spanish-language animated webseries that’s fairly straightforward. The show follows the little mermaid, Lésbica, who is blonde in this version, topless, and best friends with a clam (subtle). Her Prince Eric is an unnamed brown-haired woman who loves the sea as much as her male doppelganger. The short hits all the notes you would expect — Lésbica has a lot of sisters and friends but never feels understood, she sees and saves an unknown person who she later falls in love with, and she decides to give her fins to a sea witch in exchange for legs. So far Disney and Hans Christian Andersen as usual.

However — and I don’t say this lightly — The Lesbian Little Mermaid is bad. The animation is almost intentionally terrible both when it comes to character design and the short’s lack of movement. The dialogue is something a 13-year-old would produce on his first draft, something that’s a distinct possibility considering Amazon’s Video Direct uploading options for creators. The audio crackles often, and it’s not uncommon for the subtitles to skip forward several scenes. It’s offensive not just because of its many crass lesbian jokes and countless topless scenes but offensive to quality entertainment. Out of all the regular writers at Decider, I cover animation the most, and I’ve always been a sucker for a good, raunchy Adult Swim show. I like dumb cartoons and juvenile humor. I could only watch the six-minute first episode in three different segments. Even then, I would pay money to get those six minutes of my life back.

So why am I writing about this awful thing now? Because you people are watching it. Right now, The Lesbian Little Mermaid is the second trending result on InstantWatcher, a site that tracks what people have added to their streaming queues. So that’s what Amazon users are apparently watching right now — one episode of a weird show about not-the-little-mermaid. It’s a terrible short that no one should ever watch, but if you must, it’s on Amazon.
