Stephen Colbert Loses His Mind After Trump Makes “Reasonable” Points About Gun Control

Not a lot shocks Stephen Colbert these days; at this point, The Late Show host has pretty much seen it all, and every time President Donald Trump does something ridiculous, Colbert’s the first one to call him out. It came as a total surprise to both Colbert and the rest of us, then, when there was suddenly very little to criticize about Trump’s bipartisan meeting with lawmakers about potential gun legislation yesterday. “I have no explanation for what happened this afternoon,” said Colbert. Before diving into the revelations from the meeting, Colbert jested that we “need to find any solution that does not involve an imaginary Donald Trump stopping an attack with ka-ra-tay.” To Colbert’s surprise, this actually seemed to come to fruition.

“Some of you are petrified of the NRA,” said Trump. “They have great power over you people. They have less power over me. What do I need?”

“Uh, a conscience, a shred of dignity and I’m gonna say, like, a salad once in a while,” Colbert answered.

The host was certainly quick to shoot down Trump’s claims that Obama had made it difficult to pass gun control legislation, but soon found himself at a loss when Trump started speaking with a sense of… well, common sense. When the president bluntly told GOP members that a concealed carry reciprocity in their gun bill would ensure it “never” got passed, Colbert seemed to short-circuit.

“He’s… being… reasonable?” Colbert asked, stunned. “I’ve gotta give credit to Donald Trump,” Colbert said. And when he heard that Trump liked the idea of taking guns early, the host was stopped cold. “I never thought he’d go there. But not only did he go there, he went way past there—to a place no one had a ticket for!”

“Well, he’s finally doing something Obama never did,” Colbert said. “He’s coming for your guns.”

Colbert’s sentiment may be short-lived, however, as Trump predictably backpedaled on his statements in a tweet this morning:

Just like his administration, it seems, none of Trump’s statements have any permanence.
