‘Deception’ on ABC: A Magician? In The FBI?? What’s The Deal With This New Show?

You’ve seen the promo for ABC’s new show Deception, maybe during one of The Bachelor‘s many commercial breaks, as it’s clearly much more exciting than whatever Arie was (or wasn’t) doing at the moment, or tonight during the Oscars, or definitely next Sunday night during American Idol, as the new hour-long drama/comedy/magic show premieres right after the singing competition. Sooo, what’s the deal with this illusionist guy helping the FBI?

Deception stars Jack Cutmore-Scott as Cameron Black, one of the biggest magicians in the world — think David Blaine but charming instead of kinda creepy. When someone close to him ends up in trouble, he offers to team up with the FBI to solve the case; he needs their help, and they can use his, because it turns out criminals are basically their own form of illusionists.

With actual magicians David Kwong and Francis Menotti on staff, plus from the minds of executive producers Greg Berlanti and Chris Fedak, who has nicknamed the show “Magician Impossible,” Deception takes your average procedural and adds healthy doses of action, humor, and really, sparkle to the whole thing to create and hour of television that is just plain fun.

With Ilfenesh Hadera as Agent Kay Daniels and Amaury Nolasco as Mike Alvarez, the FBI side of the show is just as cool as Cameron’s magic team, which includes Justin Chon, Lenora Crichlow, and Vinnie Jones. Oh, and just wait until you get a look at the “Archive of Illusion”.

But really, here’s all you have to know: stay tuned after American Idol on Sunday, March 11th at 10pm ET/PT and watch the first five minutes of Deception. Really. The show very wisely kicks off with a magic trick that will have you immediately intrigued. The only thing you’ll be asking yourself is, “How’d they do that…getting me invested in a show so quickly?”

And: ta-da! We’ll have the answers. Well, some of them. Decider visited the NYC set of Deception this winter and we’ll have even more secrets from the set coming later this week.
