Australian comedian Chris Lilley, who created and starred in series such as Summer Heights High and Angry Boys, is to front a 10-episode comedy for Netflix.
The SVOD service has ordered an as-yet-untitled series from Lilley and his production partner Laura Waters, who founded Australian production company Princess Pictures. It is the digital platform’s latest investment in original content in the country after it ordered its first origination, supernatural crime drama Tidelands last year, as well as co-productions including Glitch, Pine Gap, The New Legends Of Monkey and Beat Bugs.
Details of the show are being kept under wraps, but the order was revealed by Annastacia Palaszczuk, Premier of the Queensland territory, who announced that the series, which will film between March and June 2018, would generate a A$6.35M ($4.9M) boost for the local economy.
“I am delighted to have enticed Chris Lilley and producer Laura Waters to Queensland,” she said. “The series will employ up to 250 Queensland cast and extras, plus around 100 Queensland crew. The project will also support two local screen practitioners, who will have the opportunity to work on the series to further develop their professional skills.”
It becomes the latest high-profile film and TV series to film in the region as part of the local government’s A$50M (US$39M) strategy to attract production projects. It comes after series such as Tidelands, Disney’s crime drama Harrow and Thor: Ragnarok. “Queensland’s continued ability to attract high-quality film and television production is a testament to our local screen industry,” she added.
