The Reese Witherspoon/Adam Rippon Rom-Com of Your Dreams Is Closer Than Ever

Olympic bronze medalist and America’s gay athletic sweetheart? Meet Academy Award-winning actress and America’s other sweetheart. Last night on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, lead guest Reese Witherspoon was treated with the opportunity to meet figure skater Adam Rippon, whose praises she’d been singing on Twitter all through the Olympics. The resulting encounter was as adorable as any meet-cute in any of Reese’s romantic comedies. Sure, she’s straight and married while he is gay and single (oh hey, me too, can somebody get Sally Field to fix us up?), but that shouldn’t stop us all as a culture from finding a way to make this unconventional rom-com a reality.

Colbert “surprised” Witherspoon by bringing out Rippon — his scheduled second guest — a bit early, and the figure skater was soon charming the A Wrinkle in Time actress with his Olympic bronze medal, the missing button on his shirt, and his preternatural ability to take any scenario and create A Moment out of it.

This meeting, of course, has been written in the stars for weeks. Last month, when Rippon was making short work of wrapping America around his little finger with his gorgeous work on the ice and glittering personality in interviews, Witherspoon took notice:

Twitter being primarily an aparatus for famous people to meet one another, Rippon responded with a quickness:

From there, Rippon was also pretty much openly courting a friendship with Reese. In one interview, he said all he wanted to do was “make Reese Witherspoon proud.”

Wouldn’t we all, Adam? Wouldn’t we all? Honestly, if Adam Rippon can capitalize on his fleeting window of post-Olympic fame to get a Reese Witherspoon movie to happen, maybe we ought to scrounge up a gold medal for him anyway, because that would truly be a feat greater than any quadruple jump.
