I see you, Marvel fans! I know you’ve already binged all 13 new episodes of Marvel’s Jessica Jones on Netflix, and I know you’re online right now, looking for info on Season 3. I know you… because I am you. After finishing Season 2 of Jessica Jones, I also wondered when I’d get another season of hard-drinking and hard-hitting drama from Marvel’s hard-luck heroine. If that’s what you’re wondering, then you’ve come to the right place! I’m on the case to find out if and when the next season is coming out–but first, let’s get into spoilers

Does Marvel’s Jessica Jones Season 2 end on a cliffhanger?

Much respect to any season of TV that closes with an episode that expertly straddles the line between season and series finale. JJ Season 2’s closing episode, “AKA Playland,” could go either way, honestly. Again, SPOILER ALERT! You cool? Okay. The episode includes the defeat of the season’s main antagonist, Janet McTeer’s raging Alisa Jones (AKA Jessica’s thought-dead mom). That defeat doesn’t come at the hands of Jessica, however; Trish (Rachael Taylor) takes Alisa out from a distance with a bullet–and Jess ain’t happy about that. Things don’t get better from there, as Jess’ ex-assistant Malcolm (Eka Darville) signed up to work for her corporate competition. The season ends with Jessica estranged from her two closest friends, Trish and Malcolm. It’s not all hopeless, though, as she realizes that she needs human connection after all and (heartstrings alert) joins her sexy superintendent (J.R. Ramirez)  and his son for dinner.

Let’s break this down: was this a season finale or could this be at all satisfying as a series finale? While there’s a sense of finality to the episode (the villain is killed, and Jessica and Malcolm are in new phases of their lives), there is one dangling plot thread: Trish has powers. We see in the final moments of Season 2 that the slapdash surgical procedure she subjected herself to has given her catlike reflexes. Girl caught her falling phone on the toe of her expensive boot! After two seasons hyping up Trish’s gradual superhero transformation, we are finally here!

So no, this is not a satisfying series finale! We can’t leave Jessica friendless, and we can’t leave upstanding Malcolm in the clutches of a morally bankrupt law firm! Plus, Trish has powers! We have spent 26 episodes watching her claw her way into power, we would feel cheated for her story to get cut off right here. Give us more!

Will there be a Jessica Jones Season 3?

This is the big question, made bigger by the fact that Disney (the company that owns Marvel) is launching its own streaming service in the near future that will compete with Netflix. We also know that the service will include all of the Marvel movies. So what does that mean for Netflix/Marvel shows like Jessica Jones? Will Disney let their main competitor continue to use their characters? Will new seasons of these shows move to the Disney service? Or could Netflix cancel the shows out of spite?

While there’s a lot that could change, it looks like nothing is actually changing. In January 2018, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos assuaged fans’ biggest fears by confirming that the Marvel/Netflix shows are going nowhere. “As long as they keep making those shows, they continue on Netflix,” said Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. “Our Marvel series that Disney produces for us — we own those shows. They run until we cancel them.” Netflix Chief Executive Reed Hastings added, “We get to use them for a very long time.” That sounds pretty definitive, right? Fears, they are assuaged! So when does Jessica Jones Season 3 come out?

It’s still too early to know for sure, as Jones occupies a corner of Netflix with a lot of other Marvel heroes. Luke Cage Season 2 is up next, dropping on June 22, 2018. Netflix released 3 Marvel shows in 2017 (Iron Fist, The Defenders, The Punisher), so it’s possible they’ll stick to a three-seasons-a-year schedule for 2018 and beyond. My guess would be that we get Daredevil Season 3 at the end of the 2018, following Jessica and Luke. That means that, going by the order they were announced, 2019 could include Iron Fist Season 2, The Punisher Season 2, and either another season of The Defenders or Jessica Jones Season 3.

So, depending on whether or not we get more Defenders (or a new show we don’t yet know about!), it’s possible that we could get more Jessica Jones in late 2019 or early 2020. That’s a long way to wait, but these Netflix shows take time.

Decider will update this article as more information is released about Jessica Jones Season 3.
