Netflix Reportedly Developing a ‘60 Minutes’ Style News Show

Is there any game Netflix won’t get into? After consistently delivering with original series, films, and satirical news offerings, the platform is now reportedly developing a straight weekly news program in the style of CBS’ 60 Minutes or ABC’s 20/20. While comedians like Chelsea Handler, Joel McHale, David Letterman (and Hasan Minhaj, Norm MacDonald, and more ahead) have tackled current affairs in their own way, the streaming giant is ready to get a little more serious.

According to Marketwatch, Netflix is in the early phases of developing a “sharp, balanced” news show to rival the aforementioned network series. The platform is seeking to corner both sides of the political aisle, a market that has seemingly been neglected by current programming. Marketwatch’s source, an anonymous TV executive, weighed in, saying that Netflix “spotted a hole in the market for a current affairs TV show encompassing both sides of the political divide and are seeking to fill it.”

“Netflix are proceeding with caution over this because they’re well aware that most new current affairs shows underwhelm and are expensive,” said the source. “They want to make their show economically viable without compromising the production costs and newsgathering operation.”

With a reported budget of some $8 billion dedicated to original content this year, it doesn’t seem like shelling out a little cash on a weekly news program is too much a stretch for Netflix. The company has yet to confirm anything, but with everything else they have under their belt, it seems pretty likely that the next move would be in the direction of news-based programing.

Decider has reached out to Netflix for comment and will update this article if and when we receive a response.
