Watch An 8-Year-Old Alicia Vikander Win A Swedish Lip-Syncing Competition

Before Alicia Vikander was kicking ass as Lara Croft in the new Tomb Raider, she was… winning Swedish lip-syncing competitions?

Last night (March 14), Vikander visited Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show to promote her new movie, and she quickly revealed that she wasn’t always dead set on being an actress. In fact, as a kid, she was really interested in singing, and the young star even tested out her skills on a popular talent show, The Little Stars (I won’t even try to spell the original Swedish name). Vikander explained that the show was actually a lip-syncing competition — something Fallon is very familiar with — and even though she sung “a Swedish ballad” instead of “Tina Turner, or Michael Jackson” like the other kids, the talented future star ended up winning.

Of course, Fallon had gotten his hands on the footage of 8-year-old Vikander’s performance in advance, and hoo boy, is it something you won’t want to miss. The footage opens with a super cute interview of a young Vikander telling a host that “It’s hard to choose” between singing and acting. “It’s gonna be one or the other,” she says. But things really get going when she begins lip-syncing, and seriously, she is GOOD. Like, so good that I couldn’t even tell she was lip-syncing. Vikander stares into the distance like a professional opera singer, even changing her facial expression as the music speeds up and slows down. The audience loves her performance, and at the end of the video, she’s handed a huge trophy and is awarded the top prize, “for the ability to show big emotions with small means in a magical way.”

Vikander doesn’t think about her lip-syncing past much any more, but she did tell Fallon that her mom keeps the trophy in a very special place: “She kept it in the hallway. She put the laundry keys in it,” says the actress. Or should we say, the lip-syncing champion.

Tomb Raider premieres in the U.S. on Friday, March 16.
