This Map Shows The Most Popular Netflix Show In Each Country

Netflix doesn’t release information about their viewership numbers, but every once in a while, someone will put in the hard work and attempt to figure out which Netflix series are winning the ratings war. To help out those curious about Netflix’s international reach, the website HighSpeedInternet has created a map that shows the most popular Netflix show in each country.

According to HighSpeedInternet, the most popular show on Netflix among Americans isn’t even a Netflix Original at all: it’s Shameless, a Showtime series that drops new seasons onto Netflix a few months after they air on Showtime itself. As it turns out, non-Netflix Originals lead the pack when it comes to the most popular Netflix shows in the world, as well. The BBC drama Sherlock takes the #1 spot for the world’s most popular Netflix show — it’s super popular in places like Bangladesh, Estonia, and Armenia. Behind Sherlock, the second most popular Netflix show across the globe is Friends, a major favorite among fans in countries including India, Lebanon, and Ukraine interested in seeing what life was like in 1990s NYC.

Netflix Originals do take over in the #3 and #4 most popular shows across the globe, however. HighSpeedInternet reports that Narcos, Netflix’s biographical drama about Pablo Escobar’s drug empire, and House of Cards, the political thriller, fascinate viewers across the globe, even in countries as removed from Colombia and Washington, D.C. as Poland, Cyprus, and Switzerland.

HighSpeedInternet calculated their findings using Google Trends, which provides information about the most popular search topics in a given state, country, or region. Of course, Google Trends isn’t a foolproof way to figure out which Netflix shows reign supreme, but overall, it’s a pretty good estimate of what someone in southeastern Germany is watching at any given time.

If you’re interested in a more in depth analysis of these Netflix trends (or are just looking for a cool new show to watch), head over to HighSpeedInternet ASAP. You won’t be disappointed.
