NBC’s Entertainment Chairman Just Hinted That We ‘May Not Have Seen The Last Of ‘Smash”

The legacy of NBC’s Smash is an interesting one. You either unabashedly loved it, hate-watched the heck out of it, or never even heard of it. When I asked Decider’s resident Smash expert Joe Reid to describe the series, he called it “misbegotten Broadway fantasia,” which I believe is a very poetic way of saying that the show is Bonkers City, USA.

Despite only producing 32 episodes, the polarizing musical drama has developed a cult following, a fanbase Chairman of NBC Entertainment Robert Greenblatt wishes would have been a bit more robust back when the series aired on NBC.

“Interestingly enough, I hear more about people loving Smash now than I ever did when it was on the air,” Greenblatt said during a recent appearance on Variety’s Stagecraft podcast.

Despite airing its final episode in 2013, a comeback for the Katharine McPhee/Debra Messing series isn’t out of the question… but it might not be on the small screen. Greenblatt revealed that NBC’s been thinking about different ways to stage a musical based on Smash or Bombshell, which was the Marilyn Monroe-centered Broadway musical within the show

“There’s an incarnation which could sort of combine both,” Greenblatt said. “You may not have seen the last of Smash yet. I think the next incarnation will be on stage.”

Will Smash be revived as a musical? Who knows. In the meantime, let’s work on bringing the show to Netflix.
