Brendan Fraser Loves Prestige Dramas as Much as You Do

This week, FX will premiere another ambitious miniseries, this time from director Danny Boyle. Trust tells a dramatized and star-studded version of the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III. As Decider has covered before, Trust is a thrilling, visually stunning, and fun watch with a compelling story about legacies hiding beneath its glamour. However, one of the most exciting elements of the FX original doesn’t have to do with the Getty family at all. Trust is bringing Brendan Fraser back into the mainstream spotlight.

Fraser is perhaps best known for starring in action blockbusters like Crash, The Mummy, and George in the Jungle, but he disappeared from Hollywood in recent years. Early in 2018, Fraser explained his disappearance, claiming that the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association sexually assaulted him, causing him to withdraw from the industry. The HFPA is still investigating these claims.

One of Fraser’s first biggest projects since his return is coming to FX. In Trust, Fraser plays James Fletcher Chace, John Paul Getty’s (Donald Sutherland) right-hand man and the person he sends to Italy to negotiate the ransom of his grandson, John Paul Getty III (Harris Dickinson). Armed with a cowboy hat and a deep love of America, Chace is one of the most entertaining elements of this ever-entertaining show and often acts as a guide for the audience.

“He’s a man with a textured past. He’s on a journey of redemption,” Fraser said during a panel for Trust at the Television Critics Association’s 2018 winter tour. “He wants to rescue this kid for personal reasons outside of just being beholden to his boss, the richest man in the world. I approached this from the boots and belt and hat up.”

After the panel, Decider had a chance to talk to Fraser about what television shows he’s been watching recently. “You know, what I was really enjoying, I was big on The Night Of. And I’m hopeful there will be another iteration,” he said.

Fraser also revealed that he’s been catching up on Westworld, Fargo, and “too much news.” However, Fraser has a great way to relax when he feels overwhelmed by the news — putting on a Simpsons marathon. We can all learn from him.

Trust premieres on Sunday, March 25 at 10 p.m. ET.
