The ‘Fire and Fury’ TV Series Got The Best Director For The Job

It was only a matter of time until Michael Wolff’s controversial book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House got the TV treatment, and now, the series officially has a director. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Emmy Award-winning director Jay Roach, who previously helmed Game Change for HBO and also has an impressive comedy résumé, has signed on to direct the planned TV series.

As of now, there is no network attached to the drama, but Wolff, BBC executive Michael Jackson, and The Young Pope producer John Lyons will executive produce along with Roach. Roach was previously attached to create an HBO miniseries chronicling the 2016 presidential election and the inner workings of the Hillary Clinton/Donald Trump race, but the series was scrapped after Mark Halperin, who was behind much of the source material, was accused of sexual harassment by five women.

The move to hire Roach is a smart one; with political material like All the Way, Recount, and the aforementioned Game Change in his wheelhouse, he’s bound to have the right sensibilities for Fire and Fury. (And thanks to having helmed funny flicks like Meet the ParentsThe Campaign, and Austin Powers, among others, he also has the right sense of humor to deal with the inherent absurdity of our current administration).

Fire and Fury tells the story of Trump’s first year as president and debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list in January of this year. We don’t want to speak too prematurely, but it seems like the events described in Wolff’s book will make for some great television, especially with Roach at the helm.
