The Rock Has A Totally Bizarre Amazon Channel

UPDATE (3/30/18): The Rock’s Amazon channel is no longer available. You can check out the content on his YouTube channel. Original article follows.

If there’s one thing that we as a nation can probably agree on it’s that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is good. Whether he’s crashing cars in the Fast and Furious franchise or making board games into a blockbuster hit, Johnson has an all-around lovable charm you typically don’t see with celebrities anymore. We love The Rock, so more of him should be a great thing. In theory. In practice, it’s an even better thing, and you end up with bizarre niche products like Amazon’s eclectic and oddly fun The Rock.

That’s right — the wrestler turned movie superstar has his own collection of videos that all Amazon Prime members can stream whenever they want. Called in its description “The official channel for Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson” (though it is not listed as an official Amazon Channel), The Rock is partially a distribution branch for Johnson’s studio, Seven Bucks Digital Studios. It features some of the same videos as The Rock’s YouTube page, which has over 2 million subscribers and 75 million views, but the Prime Video page seems to offer more of a curated selection. Also of note? The Rock himself doesn’t appear in the videos, so if you’re looking for your Dwayne Johnson fix you might want to check out any of the thirty-six movies he’s probably appearing in at this very moment.

So what sort of content does the winner of the 2001 Teen Choice Award for Choice Movie Villain want you to watch? Kind of a little bit of everything. The first video is from Lilly Singh, the YouTube star known as  IISuperwomanII. In her five-minute video, Singh talks about how vlogging helped her with her depression, praises Seven Bucks, and encourages everyone who wants to create something to do it. It’s a sweet and uplifting little watch well worth five minutes. Next up is an 11-minute prank video involving a masked driver and 100 tacos followed by a seven-minute short about The Rock’s craziest fan.

Altogether there are 28 videos like this ranging from YouTube style vlogs to low-budget shorts to even cooking videos, the longest of which only runs for 16 minutes. Some of the videos are silly. Some are heartfelt. Some are a little dumb. However, all of them talk about and praise The Rock in the same winking way. If this was a channel dedicated to any other celebrity, these mini-fan videos may seem irritating, but because they’re about The Rock, they feel like inoffensive fun.

There’s also reason to believe the title is a fairly well watched one. Over the past couple of weeks, The Rock has stood as one of the top-watched results on InstantWatcher, a site that monitors what subscribers add to their Netflix and Amazon Video queues. Whether people are actually watching the title or merely adding it to the list because it looks interesting is another question entirely, but the point remains: The Rock grabs attention.

If you’re looking for some slightly weird but still light-hearted internet oddity to explore, take a chance on The Rock on Prime Video. It’s not the best thing you can stream on Amazon Video, but the collection does act like a fun treasure trove of slightly offbeat watches all about the mysterious and beloved figure that is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. My recommendation is that you grab your fanny pack and start with the delightful “6 Last Minute Rock Halloween Costumes.”
