Benedict Cumberbatch Told ‘Star Trek’ Spoilers to Just One Person: Stephen Hawking

We all know J.J. Abrams loves his secrets and big reveals. The guy can’t say no to a good mystery, and actors have to play along with Abrams’ games if they want to star in big franchises like Star Wars and Star Trek. That was definitely the case with 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness, a movie so steeped in mystery that no one was even allowed to talk about who the film’s villain really was. That was a particularly interesting experience for Benedict Cumberbatch, a.k.a. the guy playing the unnamed big bad.

However, Cumberbatch didn’t keep the fact that he was playing classic Trek villain Khan totally a secret (also, come on, no spoiler alert necessary; fans had it figured out before the movie even hit!). There was one person he let it slip to: legendary physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking.

“To one person who I thought deserved to know, and that was Stephen Hawking,” Cumberbatch revealed during an interview on The Graham Norton Show. “We were into our third margarita, I think, and I decided to tell him and he, literally, apart from the agents who told me the news and the people who were employing me were the only people that were supposed to know. So yeah, I told him.” You can watch the complete interview segment above.

Cumberbatch and Hawking being drinking buds may seem surprising, but the two actually have a history that stretches back a ways. Cumberbatch played Hawking in a 2004 television film Hawking, making him the first person to ever play the scientist on film.

Obviously Hawking could have figured out who Cumberbatch was playing just by watching the trailers, considering that every rando with a YouTube account did basically just that. But still, it’s cool to know that Hawking got a heads up from Cumberbatch himself over a round of drinks.
