There’s an ‘Arrested Development’ Easter Egg in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

It’s no surprise that Avengers: Infinity War has a lot going on. Any given scene has upwards of a dozen A-list actors and beloved super characters matching wits or sparring with evil hordes. There’s absolutely no way to catch everything this Marvel movie is throwing at you, even if you had a ton of Stark Tech at your disposal. That’s why if you’re like me and the friends I went on this infinite adventure with, there’s one line in the credits that will catch your eye and make you scratch your head.

There’s a special, very noticeable thank you to the producers of the Fox sitcom Arrested Development for the usage of one of the show’s characters in the movie. Say huh now? Did John Beard give a news report at some point? Was the stair car parked in front of Doctor Strange’s Greenwich lair? Was Thanos on a Segway the entire time?!

It turns out that none of that is true, and while the answer isn’t totally a spoiler, we’re gonna throw up a SPOILER ALERT because we don’t want to ruin anything for anyone!

So, SPOILER ALERT!

You okay? You ready?

To keep things super vague, one plotline in Infinity War includes a return trip to Knowhere. Previously seen in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Knowhere is an old fashioned hive of scum and villainy, an outpost carved out of the severed head of an ancient cosmic being known as a Celestial. Inside Knowhere is the collection of the Collector, a flamboyant trader known for keeping exotic items under glass. During this scene, you’ll want to pay close attention to all the items seen in the collection, because they include…

Yep, a Tobias Fünke in his Blue Man Group makeup lookalike complete with mustache, glasses, and jean cut-offs. This connection may seem out of place for a Marvel movie, but it actually makes a lot of sense if you’re familiar with the filmographies of Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo. The Russo brothers directed a whole bunch of episodes of Arrested Development, including the pilot. They also have a history of shouting out their TV careers, which also included directing a bunch of episodes of Community, in Marvel movies. Their previous two MCU films, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, had cameos from Community actors Danny Pudi and Jim Rash.

So there you have it, Arrested Development fans. Keep your eyes peeled when [spoilers] go to Knowhere to [seriously, spoilers], because there’s a specimen from a race of Tobias creatures being held in captivity. Now you’ll be able to explain to all your bewildered buds what that Arrested Development shout out in the credits is all about, and knowing more than the people sitting next to you is undoubtedly one of the great joys of seeing a Marvel movie in the theater.
