Fans Come to Martin Short’s Rescue After Ruthless Reviewer Deems Iconic Comedian “Desperately Unfunny”
There are a lot of terrible things about this universe, but this mashup isn’t one of them. The official Star Wars YouTube channel has recently released a video of Ron Howard narrating everyone’s favorite story from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. The word perfect doesn’t even begin to do it justice.
Even a casual Arrested Development fan knows that the narrator’s snarky comments are one of the best parts of this cult classic, and the Star Wars summary really capitalizes on that. The video starts with Arrested Development‘s traditional quirky opening credits, which clash beautifully with Star Wars‘ somber visuals. The credits even end with a family picture that features Chewie front and center.
However, the best part of the mashup is how many similarities there are between the iconic sci-fi drama and Howard’s too-smart-for-its-own-good sitcom. Of course Luke Skywalker is his universe’s Michael Bluth. But the video doesn’t shy away from mocking Luke’s incestuous relationship with Leia, hinting that there’s some George Michael in this characterization as well. In true Arrested Development fashion Howard’s narrator even plugs his own movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story, while he’s introducing Han Solo. If there’s one thing that comedy did right (aside from everything) it was painfully on-the-nose product placement.
But all of the best quips are reserved for Obi-Wan Kenobi. Not only does the video call him out on his lies and for his confusing relationship with Anakin / Darth Vader, there’s even a Mr. F reference.
Though the video is more of a promotion for Howard’s take on the Han Solo movie than anything else, it’s funny enough to stand on its own. If Solo is anything like this (it won’t be), it can have all of my money. So far Howard has only recapped Star Wars: A New Hope, but here’s hoping recaps for the rest of the series are in all of our futures.
