Mike Myers Is On Board With An ‘Austin Powers’ Revival… But With A Twist

Mike Myers’ beloved spy franchise Austin Powers was a groovy trilogy (baby), but would you be interested in watching a fourth installment? In today’s reboot-happy climate, literally anything that was popular in the past is fair game for a revival. Some are both creatively and commercially successful. Others? Not so much.

During the premiere of the new heist thriller Terminal, Entertainment Tonight asked the former Saturday Night Live funnyman which of his iconic characters he’d consider stepping back into. The answer was obvious: Guru Pitka from The Love Guru.

Just kidding. Myers selected the legendary Dr. Evil.

“I would love to do a movie from Dr. Evil’s perspective,” Myers said. “So it would be Dr. Evil 1, Austin Powers 4, is how I would roll. Start the campaign, please. Thank you.”

Hey, Dr. Evil didn’t spend six years in Evil Medical School to not have his own movie, thank you very much.

I haven’t watched the Austin Powers trilogy in years, but I remember Goldmember, which premiered back in 2002, being a creative step down from 1999’s The Spy Who Shagged Me. But maybe that’s just time and memory playing tricks on me? Both films performed similarly in the eyes of critics as well as at the box office. The Spy Who Shagged Me earned a little over $312 million globally and currently boasts a 51% Rotten Tomatoes rating, while Goldmember brought in over $296 million and has a 54% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Comparatively, The Love Guru earned (dramatic pause): one million dollars.

Just razzin’ ya, Love Guru fans. The film earned a cool $40 mill globally.

Perhaps a Cobra Kai-inspired revival that centers on a new protagonist could work. Considering the recent glut of reboots, it’s certainly a possibility.
