This ‘Friends’ Fan Theory Finally Explains Why Ross And Monica Were Siblings

If you’ve been alive and relatively conscious in the 21st century, you probably know about the show Friends. It’s a classic comedy that’s so devotedly about friendship, the word is right there in the title. But this weekend, one comedian threw every ounce of certainty we felt toward this buddy comedy out the window with a single tweet. What if some members of the Friends weren’t really friends but friends by default?

Of course this is all comes down to Ross (David Schwimmer). Comedian Emily Heller claims that there’s a good reason why Ross and Monica (Courtney Cox) had to be siblings in the show. If they weren’t, then all of the Friends would have stayed with Carol (Anita Barone) instead of Ross when the pair divorced. It’s a fact of life that Carol was cool and Ross sucked. But because the Friends also wanted to remain close with Monica, they had to side with the paleontologist everyone loves to hate.

Some Twitter users immediately jumped onto this take because wildly theorizing about shows is fun and Ross is the worst:

Others were less convinced:

Does Ross really belong? Have all the Ross haters been right all along about this fairly whiney academic? Or is the truth more complicated? Maybe the Friends didn’t need Ross AND Monica to be complete, but they actually liked spending time with Ross. After all, when your life is defined by sitcom antics, sometimes you need someone around to pull you down. Maybe Ross isn’t even that bad of a guy, just annoying.

The truth is out there, people. And if anyone can find it its internet sleuths who need something to do while re-bingeing Friends.
