British Host of ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’ Has One Job, Messes It Up

What really goes into hosting a game show? At the end of the day, the job boils down to showing up, looking presentable, being amicable, and moving the show along. Oh, and hosts also need to give contestants the right answers to trivia questions. It’s that last part that guest host Jeremy Clarkson had a problem with on Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

In honor of the 20th anniversary of the high-stakes game show, ITV has been airing a seven-episode special of the series. This new run is being hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, a celebrity best known for hosting BBC’s Top Gear and getting fired from the hugely profitable show because of an on-set fight. Clarkson is a pretty divisive figure, so it’s not much of a surprise that his run on Who Wants to be a Millionaire would include a viral moment.

The question was about the identity of an ibex. “I’m not even going to look at the screen. That’s the correct answer,” Clarkson said about the contestant’s selection of D) A deer.

For a few moments everyone was happy. This contestant, who thought he just won £15,000, was thrilled about all of his new cash. The audience was happy to see someone win. Clarkson was happy because he knew the answer to a question without a screen telling him what’s what.

They were all wrong. An ibex is a goat.

Clarkson immediately backpedaled as the contestants face fell. After a few more awkward moments of sputtering and claiming he had seen ibexes “boinging around like deers,” Clarkson finally accepted that he was wrong. But it wasn’t all bad news. At least the contestant walked away with a £1,000 consolation prize. You can watch the full moment in all of its awkward glory above.
