Wilmer Valderrama Delightfully Dressed Like a Bird to Explain Venezuela’s Political Crisis

Listen up Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro because John Oliver and Wilmer Valderrama have some choice words for you.

The late night host dedicated the latest episode of Last Week Tonight to unpacking Venezuela’s dire financial crisis. But as it always the case with this late night show, it was its ending that packed the biggest punch. After a 15-minute rant about the horrors of life in Venezuela under Maduro’s rule, Oliver closed things out by cutting to Valderrama dressed in a giant bright green bird costume. Hold on, there’s a point to this silliness.

The bit was in reference Maduro’s claims that his predecessor, Hugo Chávez, has visited him in the form of a bird. The star of That ’70s Show started off his speech to Maduro by questioning his knowledge of birds. “If you’re thinking, ‘This is just Wilmer Valderrama in a bird suit,’ well you used to think I was Hugo Chávez. You’re not exactly the authority on ‘What’s birds?'” Valderrama said.

The sketch is one of Last Week Tonight’s better ones. Throughout Valderrama’s roughly three minutes on stage he calls John Oliver an idiot and claims that every time a bird poops on someone, it’s a political statement, a joke that nods to the fact revolutionaries have been using their own poop to protest Maduro. The segment even re-enacts a clip of Maduro getting caught while wolfing down some food, and Valderrama makes a Lion King jab, calling Oliver “Zazu.”

“The point is Maduro you need to accept humanitarian aid and cool it with the dictator stuff,” the bird-actor concluded. “Or I’ve got a poo-poo-tov cocktail with your name on it right here.”
