‘Mamma Mia!’ On Netflix: Stream ABBA’s Delightful Hit Musical Tonight

I’m about to give you the best news you’ll get all day: Mamma Mia! is now streaming on Netflix.

Mamma Mia! is the simple story of a young bride named Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) who dreams of having her father give her away on her wedding day. The problem? Sophie has been snooping through her mother’s journals and it turns out that there are three men who might be her father. So she does the sensible thing and invites them all to the quaint Greek isle where she lives without telling anyone why she’s done so — least of all, her harried mom, Donna (Meryl Streep). Oh, and Donna and her friends used to be niche pop stars who sang ABBA songs. In fact, everyone sings ABBA songs here because this is the ABBA musical movie.

Despite its insane set up, Mamma Mia! is the closest thing we have to cinematic serotonin. It is guaranteed to lift your spirits and make you happy. If ABBA’s sensationally catchy pop songs don’t worm their way into your brain, then the sun-soaked scenery will. You can practically see the actors’ tans darkening in real time in the heat of the high Mediterranean sun. And if the music and the magical Greek setting doesn’t turn your frown upside down, then the irreverently silly story will.

More than a jukebox musical, Mamma Mia! is an enthusiastic ode to hope, love, and happiness. Does the plot make sense? Not really? Do we ever really know who Sophie’s father is? Well, I’m pretty sure it’s Bill, but who knows? Mamma Mia! is not the best movie ever made, but it is the best movie that you could watch right now.

There is, of course, one extra perk to Mamma Mia! landing on Netflix today. The film’s long-awaited sequel/prequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, is due to hit theaters this July. The new film will not only follow Sophie as she deals with the stress of expecting her own child after the death of her mother, but we’ll get a flashback to young Donna’s romantic hijinks.

Just saying: there’s no better day to stream Mamma Mia! on Netflix than today.
