Kristen Wiig Crashed The Royal Wedding With ‘Cord & Tish’

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s royal wedding was the event of the year. Celebrities like George Clooney, Serena Williams, Elton John, David Beckham, and the cast of Suits were all in attendance for the ceremony in Windsor, and over in London, Kristen Wiig crashed Funny or Die and HBO’s The Royal Wedding Live With Cord And Tish.

The Royal Wedding Live With Cord And Tish marked the triumphant return of Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon‘s quirky Rose Parade commentators Cord Hosenbeck and Tish Cattigan. The two characters first appeared in Funny or Die’s bonkers collaboration with Amazon — The 2018 Rose Parade hosted by Cord and Tishan experimental live comedy event that befuddled serious Rose Parade enthusiasts, and enchanted comedy nerds. Cord and Tish’s Royal Wedding coverage was less of a home run, if only because HBO didn’t nab the rights to the ceremony itself, so the first forty minutes was just Cord and Tish vamping from their booth in London. But things perked up as soon as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left the church and the show really soared when Wiig made a surprise appearance in the last act.

Kristen Wiig played a fictional columnist and author named Sir Albert Langham-Kingsley. Yes, Sir Albert. Wiig donned a tweed suit, fake facial hair, and a plaid cap to play the ludicrous character. The character brought numerous gag pipes and a bunch of “scoops,” like how Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were set to move to Pittsburgh after the wedding. Sir Albert also said that the guest list included such luminaries as Ray Liotta, Capain Sully, Young Sheldon, David Lynch, and David Simon. “No wedding is complete without David Simon, the creator of The Wire.”

Other hilarious highlights? As the carriage took Prince Harry and Meghan Markle down the glorious Long Walk — which was probably the most gorgeous shot of the whole carriage ride — Cord said they had some time to kill and asked Tish if she would sing the theme song from Sanford and Son with him. The juxtaposition between the two comedians singing a sitcom theme over a picture perfect fairy tale moment was hilarious.

Ferrell and Shannon also reprised some choice bits from the Rose Parade, like Cord’s insane fear of horses. Tish tried to expose Cord to exposure therapy by bringing out a tiny toy horse. Cord predictably erupted. “Get that the f*ck away from me! Put that tiny horse back in that box. I’m going to lose my shit!”

And my personal favorite moment was the arrival of Old Manfred, one of Cord’s 18 legendary Basset Hounds. The poor, sweet dog was clad in a tuxedo, prompting jokes about Saville Row and his penchant for sneaking away from Cord’s home in Pasadena to raid the L.L. Bean outlet.

Was HBO’s broadcast the ideal way to watch the royal wedding? No. Not at all. (What? I’m not going to lie to you. Even Tim Meadows quipped during the first twenty minutes, “We’re having a blast out here. Only one person has fallen asleep.”) But as a punk rock send up of the event’s padded out coverage, The Royal Wedding Live With Cord And Tish can’t be beat.

If you missed The Royal Wedding Live With Cord And Tish, it will be rebroadcast tonight on HBO and you can stream it on HBO Go or HBO NOW.
