Netflix’s ‘Disenchantment’: Everything To Know About Matt Groening’s New Show

Get ready to see fairy tales like you’ve never seen them before. The premiere date for Netflix’s Disenchantment has been announced. Considering Netflix’s stellar track record when it comes to animated comedies and the fact that Disenchantment comes from The Simpsons and Futurama creator Matt Groening, it looks like we’re in for something hilarious.

Much like Futurama, Matt Groening’s Netflix show will be a themed comedy. This time all of the silly social commentary will be taking place in a made up medieval world instead of the year 3000. But there’s one big difference between The Simpsons, Futurama, and Disenchantment. Whereas the former two shows premiered on networks governed by standards and practices departments, Netflix has no filter.

What is this crazy new show about? And when can you expect Season 1 to drop? Here’s everything we know about Groening’s fairy tale romp.

What’s Disenchantment about?

The series takes places in the crumbling world of Dreamland, a medieval-esque fantasy world. Each episode will follow the misadventures of Princess Bean (Abbi Jacobson), a hard-drinking young woman who’s over the whole royalty thing. Princess Bean will be accompanied by her feisty elf companion who is cleverly named Elfo (Nat Faxo) and her personal demon named Luccio (Eric Andre). Together they’ll encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and “lots of human fools,” according to Netflix’s press release. Groening voice acting favorites like John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, and David Herman will also star in the series as well as Matt Berry, Jeny Batten, Rich Fulcher, Noel Fielding, and Lucy Montgomery.

Though he and his creative team are predominantly known for the family-focused Simpsons, Groening has had a lot of experience creating crazy worlds over the years. For seven seasons Futurama stood as an innovative homage to sci-fi, and The Simpsons’ Game of Thrones-inspired episode proved the creator can spoof fantasy just as well as he can spoof everything else. Ultimately Disenchantment sounds like a typical Groening show but with a female lead this time around.

The Netflix series is produced by ULULU Company. Groening and Josh Weinstein will be serving as executive producers.

When will Disenchantment premiere on Netflix?

The series is set to debut on Friday, August 17 with its first 10-episode season. Netflix has already ordered 20 episodes of the adult animated comedy, so we can expect at least two seasons of this fairy tale romp.

Is there a trailer of Disenchantment?

Not yet. However, Groening first teased images for Princess Bean, Elfo, and Luccio on Reddit, and Netflix has released four images for the series. You can see the rest below.

Here’s hoping we get more assets soon. The show already has Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages, so it seems promising that we’ll see more teasers soon. In the meantime, we’ll just have to re-binge Futurama again.
