New Movies On Demand: ‘Tomb Raider,’ ‘A Wrinkle in Time,’ ‘Love, Simon’ And More

When the first of the month falls on a Friday, you’ve hit the new-on-streaming lotto! Not only are there puh-lenty of new movies to stream on all your favorite services, there are also a whole lotta new movies available to purchase or rent from even more of your fave platforms. What a Friday, and what a weekend it will be! Whether you use Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu, or your cable’s on demand service, there are always a lot of new releases out there waiting for you to discover!

Why not carve out some time this weekend to sit down with the family and go on a fantastical adventure? Put on Disney’s new adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time and watch as your kids’ imaginations ignite! The visionary film from director Ava DuVernay has an all-star cast (Oprah Winfrey doesn’t act for just anybody!) will sweep you away. And after the kids go to bed, you can rent Annihilation and go on a completely different, way darker adventure. But be warned: if you watch this right before bed, you’re gonna be haunted by visions of that creepy skull bear.

What else can you buy or rent this week? Find out by taking a look at the collection of high school romances, action-packed adventures, and creepy horror now available for you to enjoy from the comfort of your very own home!

Love, Simon

Mainstream gay romance movies come along, uh, well, kinda never? Especially ones starring teenagers. Love, Simon doesn’t reinvent the wheel, not by a longshot, but it gives gay teens the kind of throwback, easy breezy pic that their straight friends have had for decades. The film stars Nick Robinson as Simon, a totally average high schooler who comes out to an anonymous guy online–and then sees his entire world turned upside-down. This is a lighthearted movie for sure, but it will also get you right in the heart. Get ready for some laughs and tears this weekend (unless you want to rent the film, then you’ll have to wait until June 12).

Tomb Raider

With the 2018 reboot, Alicia Vikander steps into the dirty old combat boots and tank top that have been Lara Croft’s trademark since she first kicked pixelated ass decades ago. The new Tomb Raider grounded the once fantastical franchise, similar to the critically-acclaimed video game from 2013. You won’t find the over-the-top antics of the two Angelina Jolie movies in this one, but you will still find plenty of action. If you want to wait to rent this one, you’ll be able to do so on June 12.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Long before her TV show changed pretty much everything about serialized storytelling on the small screen, Buffy quipped it up on the big screen in a box office miss that turned into a cult fave. Joss Whedon’s trademark dialogue is intact in this early ’90s horror comedy (and Paul Reubens really relishes it). Kristy Swanson sinks her teeth into the role of a vapid vampire slayer, one that takes destiny by the pom poms and… okay, I don’t know where that metaphor is going. She kicks ass, leave it at that! You can currently stream Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the movie) on STARZ, but it’s available to rent for just under a dollar on iTunes!
