It’s almost been a week since ABC pulled the plug on Roseanne in a surpassingly swift turn of events, part of the fallout following Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet about former President Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett. The move was so unprecedented (networks don’t just cancel their most-watched show every day) that plenty of people are still processing it. And one person close to the situation has an outlet with which to process the decision on television: Sara Gilbert.

Gilbert, who starred as Darlene Conner on the original and revived Roseanne along with serving as executive producer behind the just-canceled iteration, is also one of the co-hosts on the morning chat show The Talk.

On this morning’s episode, a visibly shaken Gilbert spoke about the sudden end of Roseanne. “In addition to my statement, I would like to say this has been a very difficult week,” she said, adding further context to tweets she sent last week.

“A lot of people have been hurt by this. I will say I’m proud of the show we made,” continued Gilbert, to applause. “The show has always been about diversity, love and inclusion, and it’s sad to see it end in this way. I’m sad for the people who lost their jobs in the process. However, I do stand behind the decision that ABC made.”

It’s still unclear what, if anything, will happen with Roseanne. The show is done at ABC, Netflix isn’t picking it up, and Barr herself has said there’s no need to petition Fox. There have been rumors that the show could continue on at ABC, possibly focusing on Gilbert’s Darlene, which would give all those writers, actors, and crew members a job. However, it would be hard to make that happen without Barr receiving some financial returns since she helped create the show.

For right now, the show is done for, and Gilbert stands behind the decision.
