Every so often we hear about a controversial pilot or scene that one of the networks deems too “horrifying” to air. While we’d certainly expect it from the primetime family networks, you’d have to imagine that there is even a line that HBO or Showtime won’t cross. Apparently Sex and the City found that line during the filming of Season 1 of the series and HBO ultimately decided not to push its boundaries.
The scene, which was actually filmed between Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and a man that she was casually dating at the time, centered on the man repeatedly asking her for blowjobs. When Charlotte refused, let’s just say the rest of the scene involved a dog and some peanut butter.
“He basically was always pushing her head down to give him oral sex. And he had this golden retriever who was always around,” the show’s creator, Darren Starr, told Vanity Fair. “She basically let him have it about being offended by his insistence on just wanting a blow job. She accused him of only liking her for that and kind of stormed out. And then she walked back in and saw that his golden retriever was going down on him.”
To add to the network’s disgust, HBO was not just perturbed the scene itself, but the fact that they even decided to film it to begin with. “It’s sort of horrifying that we shot that,” the episode’s writer, Amy B. Harris, added. “We shot him putting peanut butter on his penis, and Charlotte walks back in like, ‘Oh, I’m being unreasonable,’ and then she sees that … I can’t believe we even thought about doing it.”
The “head push” dilemma is one, which is a topic that Netflix’s Big Mouth recently addressed, but the peanut butter on the balls? Maybe it was the right decision for HBO to nix this idea. If it were aired, maybe it would have made way for that infamous “cum shot” scene that was allegedly cut from Girls.
