If you can get past the idea that some schnook would possibly leave Kristen Bell at the altar, there’s a lot to look forward to in the trailer for Like Father, the upcoming Netflix comedy starring Bell as a romantically spurned woman who sums up the premise of the movie pretty accurately in the trailer’s opening moments:
“I was left at the altar a few days ago, and my dad, who I haven’t seen since I was 5, showed up to my wedding unannounced. The two of us got incredibly drunk that night, and I must’ve blacked out, because somehow I dragged him onto this cruise that was supposed to be my honeymoon.”
Yes, that’s right. As if the forced confines and compromised hydration situations that make cruises such a dicey vacation option weren’t enough, Like Father piles on heaps and heaps of family tension to spice up the bargain.
The film is directed and co-written by Lauren Miller Rogen, whose freeloading husband Seth shows up in a supporting role as either a love interest for Bell or just a hapless one-night stand. Refreshingly, the trailer focuses on Bell’s relationship with Grammer more than any kind of rebound relationship with a guy. It’s a vibe that seems familiar if you remember the last film Lauren Miller Rogen wrote, the supremely underrated 2012 comedy For a Good Time Call… That movie had romantic relationships too, but they were much less important than the friendship bond between the two female leads (played by Miller and Ari Graynor).
Other trailer tidbits to look forward to: Broad City‘s Paul W. Downs as a fellow (gay?) cruise denizen who offers some free therapy advice (he’s been a shrink for three months), and some kind of Family Double Dare situation, because cruises will have some weird entertainment options.
Like Father hits Netflix on August 3rd.
