Goliath is back for its second season on Amazon, and with it has come a slew of new cast members. Stars like Mark Duplass, Alexandra Billings, James Wolk, and more have all joined the ranks for Goliath Season 2, and one of the most exciting additions is Lou Diamond Phillips. The La Bamba star has popped up on a handful of series in the last few years, including You’re The WorstBrooklyn Nine-NineThe Ranch, and more, and he’s showing off his dramatic chops once again opposite Billy Bob Thornton during Goliath‘s second installment.

So what exactly is Phillips’ role this season? Here’s everything you need to know. Spoilers ahead for Season 2 of Goliath!

Who does Lou Diamond Phillips play on Goliath?

Phillips stars as Oscar Suarez, an old friend of our leading man Billy McBride who escorts a very drunken Billy home from a bar and informs him that his two eldest sons have been murdered in a gang-related shooting. That’s not all, though – he’s now found himself in quite the legal situation after his 16-year-old son Julio is charged with double homicide. Police believe that he committed the murders in retaliation for the deaths of his brothers, but Oscar is convinced his son could not have possibly committed these crimes – so he enlists Billy’s help.

As we know from last season, however, Billy’s track record with murder cases is not one to write home about, so he refuses to help personally – but agrees to follow up with the public defender to ensure that Oscar gets the best defense possible. Billy being Billy, however, can’t stay away, and decides to get involved anyway after speaking with Julio.

So did Oscar’s son commit the murders?

It would appear not. A detective Billy believes to be upstanding soon proves to be corrupt, and reveals to an accomplice that they’ve framed Julio for the murders – so Oscar is right.

What happens to Oscar during Goliath: Season 2?

Unfortunately, Lou Diamond Phillips’ stint on the series is short-lived, as he is shot and killed when a car pulls up and a man shoots Oscar as he is coming out of Billy’s hotel. Oscar dies in Billy’s arms shortly after, and it’s easy to know what’s ahead: Billy’s going to fight for justice for Julio.

So Lou Diamond Phillips isn’t on Goliath very long, huh?

Sadly, yes. After being offed at the end of the first episode, it’s clear that his character really only serves as a catalyst for the rest of the season.
