‘Dark’ Creators Sign Major Multiyear Deal with Netflix

Netflis is about to get a lot more twisted and — dare I say — darker. The streaming giant has announced that it has signed an exclusive multiyear deal with Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, the creators of Netflix’s breakout German thriller Dark. This deal marks the first of its kind for the streaming service.

The time-traveling thriller was a bit of a surprise hit for everyone. The German language Dark follows Jonas (Louis Hofmann), a teenage boy who starts to investigate the disappearance of his friend’s little brother and his own father, who ended his life. What starts as a relatively small mystery spirals into a huge one involving wormholes, three different timelines, intricate puzzles, and changing alliances. Not only was Dark one of the most compelling dramas of 2017; it’s also one of the most carefully constructed time travel shows ever created.

All of Friese and bo Odar’s hard work has apparently paid off. Under this deal they will be creating new projects exclusively for Netflix‘s 125 million subscribers. Netflix’s deal with the creative duo is similar to the streaming giant’s deals with Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy, making the team the first overall European deal for Netflix. This decision speaks to Dark‘s success and profitability as well as Netflix’s trust in its international content.

“The promise of Netflix is entertainment transcending borders; where a hit show can come from anywhere in the world,” Erik Barmack, VP of International Originals at Netflix, said according to The Hollywood Reporter. “We’re tremendously happy to announce our overall deal that continues our collaboration with Bo and Jantje, whose invigorating work has engaged and thrilled audiences globally. We thank both for their trust and are beyond excited to support their vision and art as storytellers.”

“We are excited to embark on our next journey with Netflix, keep pushing boundaries and challenging viewers with new ideas,” Friese and bo Odar said in a joint statement. “We have plenty of surprises in store for them.”

Dark Season 2 still doesn’t have a release date. But based on its released photos, it looks like it’s going to be a post-apocalyptic nightmare in the best possible way. I cannot wait.
