McDonald’s Cribs from ‘Seinfeld’ to Beef Up Breakfast Sales

We already know McDonald’s loves playing into TV ideas, as evidenced by the whole Szechuan sauce/Rick & Morty fiasco. Now, knowingly or not, the fast food titan is taking an idea from another show: Seinfeld.

As reported by Bloomberg, McDonald’s is in a bit of a slump, a slump that may be traced back a few years to when the chain started offering breakfast all day long. “We took our eye off the ball on breakfast,” said Chief Financial Officer Kevin Ozan during an investor conference in May. “With everything else going on, we just lost a little focus on that breakfast day part.”

To turn the chain around, McDonald’s is looking to introduce new menu items–including muffin tops. You read that right, they’re testing out selling just the tops of muffins. McDonald’s tested out this plan in the Baltimore area, offering 160-calorie blueberry muffin tops. If this sounds familiar, that’s because it’s exactly what the Seinfeld episode “The Muffin Tops” is all about.

In the 1997 episode, Elaine–eating a muffin top after casually tossing “the stump” aside–casually mentions to her old boss that she really only likes eating the tops. “It’s crunchy, it’s explosive, it’s where the muffin breaks free of the pan and sort of… does its own thing,” explains Elaine. She’s shocked to learn a few days later that Mr. Lippman has opened up his own muffin-tops-only bakery, Top of the Muffin to You! The exclamation point is essential, by the way.

Elaine was right that people love eating muffin tops, but only if they are physically ripped from the stump. You can’t just make a muffin top, the breaking free of the pan is the whole point! Here’s hoping McDonald’s has a way to fix the problem that befell Top of the Muffin to You! People love the tops, but what do you do with the stumps? In the episode, Elaine tries to give them away to homeless shelter, but they don’t even want the unwanted stumps.

So McDonald’s, what are you gonna do with those stumps, hmmmm? Don’t let this turn into another Szechuan sauce brouhaha. Figure out your stump strategy now!
