Facebook’s New ‘Keyword Snooze’ Feature Will Prevent Your Friends From Spoiling ‘Game of Thrones’ Or Any Other Show

No matter how many times we ask them not to post about our favorite shows after they air, there’s always going to be that one Facebook friend who just simply can’t resist the temptation. Those who browse the social media platform within the hours after an episode of a television series airs, take a major risk of coming across a spoiler. The worst fans, by far, are those of Game of Thrones, but viewers have fallen victim to spoilers of Westworld, or events that transpire within Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thanks to Facebook’s new “Keyword Snooze” feature, however, you no longer have to be afraid.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the “Keyword Snooze” feature has been rolling out in waves and allows users to block stories from their news feed that contain any keyword they choose to bypass. The profile setting works by pausing all posts that feature the keyword from their friends, Pages, and Groups. The default setting lasts for 30 days, but Facebook users can “snooze again” to extend the temporary block. That is, if it takes you more than 30 days to catch up on shows… but then again, would you really be reading Decider if that was the case?

One thing the feature does not do is block Facebook ads, of course, so you could still potentially see ads related to a show or movie, even if you chose to block the respective title.

As of next week, the “Keyword Snooze” feature will be available to a couple million users and will continue to roll out to additional Facebookers if successful. If you want to check if you have the feature already, head to the news feed controls where you would access the “See First,” “Hide,” and “Unfollow” options. If you see a “Snooze” option, click on it and Facebook will allow you to choose from a bunch of keywords from a particular post to block for the following month.

Hopefully, by the time Game of Thrones airs in 2019, everyone will have access to this brilliant new feature so that we won’t have to fear social media spoilers any longer. But still, please don’t be that person. After all, there will supposedly be more character deaths than ever in the upcoming season and not all of us cord-cutters have premium cable and/or HBO Now to be able to watch the episodes live.
