Jimmy Fallon Can’t Stop Making the Same Weird Joke Over and Over Again

Every late night host has their thing, you know? David Letterman chucked pencils and notecards, Conan O’Brien has his string dance, Johnny Carson had his golf swing, Jay Leno drove on stage every night in a muscle car, tearing off his denim shirt and jeans to reveal a perfectly adequate suit and tie underneath. These guys, they have to do a show every night. Part of the comfort of a late night show is the repetition–but is there such a thing as too much repetition?

That’s what one video compilation from Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show will make you wonder. The clip cuts together numerous moments from the Tonight Show’s “Screengrabs” segment, wherein Fallon shows off funny screengrabs submitted by viewers. It turns out every time a viewer submits a funny captcha, Fallon slips into autopilot and does the exact same bit. Every. Single. Time.

He explains what a captcha is (“squiggly words you have to type in before you can buy tickets to concerts”), shows the funny captcha (“gorilla hump” is a funny word combo!), and then slips into the role of a nebbishy dad shouting at his wife/kids to not come into daddy’s office because he’s… embarrassed about looking at a captcha?

This happens repeatedly, every time, and whether or not this makes you angry is apparently a toss-up. This has firmly split Team Decider down the middle, with half us thinking this is bizarre and the other half thinking it’s no big deal. I personally find it really strange, not because he’s repeating a bit (I adore Letterman’s old “are these your drums?” gag) but because it’s a bad bit. Why is this father embarrassed about looking at a captcha? We laugh because we can all relate to the panic of someone walking in on you and getting the wrong impression–but is that really applicable to looking at a captcha of the words “gorilla hump”? Who relates to this problem?! And Fallon’s a funny guy, so why can’t he come up with a different tag on this bit? Why is it always the same needlessly embarrassed dad?

This is driving me crazy!

But maybe you’re fine with it. This may just be the late night comedy version of The Dress Incident, so, share this video with your friends and find out where they stand.

But come on, he can at least come up with a different end tag. That is not asking too much!
