Ben Affleck Joins Anne Hathaway And Dee Rees On Netflix’s ‘The Last Thing He Wanted’

Your Netflix movie queue just got a little longer, folks. Mudbound director Dee Rees is following up her Oscar-nominated film with an adaptation of Joan Didion’s 1996 novel The Last Thing He Wanted, and the cast is filled with all-stars. Today, Netflix announced that Ben Affleck, Toby Jones, Rosie Perez, Edi Gathegi, and Mel Rodriguez will be joining the film’s cast. The group will be joining Anne Hathaway and Willem Dafoe, who play a father-daughter duo involved in the Iran-Contra Affair.

Didion’s thrilling novel follows Elena McMahon (Hathaway), a former journalist who leaves her job at The Washington Post to take care of her father (Dafoe) in Costa Rica. Once there, Elena is pulled into the world of arms dealing, and she begins covertly dealing for the U.S. government in Central America. However, as the Iran-Contra Affair’s arms-for-drugs plot heats up, Elena’s life quickly becomes threatened.

Anne Hathaway is having something of a comedic renaissance following her amazing performance in Ocean’s 8, so it will be interesting to see how she handles an action-packed dramatic role — especially one that involves guns, drugs, and what sounds like non-stop violence. But if Ocean’s 8 taught us anything, it’s that we should never doubt the multi-faceted, complex talent of Anne Hathaway. Peace out, Hatha-haters.

The Last Thing He Wanted doesn’t have a release date yet, though Deadline reports that production is currently underway in Puerto Rico. Netflix traditionally moves a little faster than Hollywood studios in terms of turnaround time, but with a film as large as this (hey, stars like Anne Hathaway and Ben Affleck don’t just sign on to any old Netflix movie), things may take a little longer.  Plus, Affleck is currently shooting another Netflix filmTriple Frontier. Point being: release date is still TBD.

That being said, expect The Last Thing He Wanted to be a serious Oscar contender come 2020 — or at least it should be, given the pedigree.
