Netflix’s ‘the Dragon Prince’: Everything You Need to Know

Animation and adventure fans rejoice, for The Dragon Prince is coming to Netflix!

Wait, The Dragon Prince? You may be asking, “What is that and why should I, an animation and/or adventure enthusiast, care about it?” There’s one very big reason to care about the animated series, which Netflix just teased via its @seewhatsnext Twitter account. That reason is, perhaps surprisingly, Avatar: The Last Airbender.

No, I don’t mean the James Cameron movie that everyone except James Cameron has forgotten about. And I also don’t mean the dreadful M. Night Shyamalan movie, although I guess that’s closer to what I’m talking about than anything involving the Na’vi.

Lemme back up and start from the beginning: The Dragon Prince is an upcoming animated series from the Avatar: The Last Airbender head writer Aaron Ehasz and the director of the video game Uncharted, Justin Richmond. The synopsis that was tweeted out alongside a teaser poster reveals that the series will be about “two human princes who forge an unlikely bond with the elfin assassin sent to kill them, embarking on an epic quest to bring peace to their warring lands.” You can check out the tweet and synopses below.

So, let’s answer a few Dragon Prince questions, even though right now we don’t know a whole lot.

When will The Dragon Prince debut on Netflix?

Right now, we don’t know for sure. Deadline reported that The Dragon Prince is currently scheduled to hit Netflix in September, so go with that!

When will we get a trailer for The Dragon Prince?

Netflix could drop one at any minute, honestly, but it’s more likely that it will come alongside The Dragon Prince’s appearance at Comic-Con International in San Diego on July 21. So, you might get a first look at the series in just over a week!

What is The Dragon Prince?

Like the tweet says, it’s about “two human princes who forge an unlikely bond with the elfin assassin sent to kill them, embarking on an epic quest to bring peace to their warring lands.” That’s all we know! It’s also probably a safe bet that while the show comes from an Avatar creator and the teaser poster looks like it could fit right in with that world, The Dragon Prince is most likely in no way connected with that mythology. If it was, you figure Netflix would be leaning into that heavily. They’re not, so it probably isn’t.

Why should I care about The Dragon Prince?

Whoah, I don’t like the tone of that question! But seriously, here’s why: it has Avatar: The Last Airbender in its veins. Avatar was a brilliant animated series that ran on Nickelodeon for three seasons from 2005 to 2008. The series was applauded for it’s expansive mythology, subtle character work, and dazzling action sequences. The show, and it’s possibly-even-better sequel series The Legend of Korra, truly raised the bar when it came to TV animation. The fact that The Dragon Prince comes from someone involved in building that universe, it’s a major reason to get excited.

Unfortunately, you currently can’t stream Avatar anywhere. If you want to get a little taste of what The Dragon Prince could be, you’ll have to purchase episodes in iTunes, Amazon, or wherever you get your digital media. If you haven’t seen that show, drop the dough and prepare to be swept away–and get ready to get stoked for The Dragon Prince.
