Debby Ryan’s Teenage Revenge Fantasy Takes Center Stage In Netflix’s ‘Insatiable’ Trailer

Netflix has released the trailer for its new teenage revenge fantasy Insatiable, and it is… something. The series tells the story of Patty (Debby Ryan), a high school girl who is relentlessly bullied for being overweight. After getting mugged one night, Patty has to have her jaw wired shut, and when she returns to school, everything is different: she’s lost tons of weight, and now, everyone sees her as the “hot girl.” But Insatiable isn’t your classic formerly-ignored-girl-becomes-cool story; Patty isn’t interested in joining the ranks of the school’s popular crowd. Instead, she wants revenge on the people who have wronged her, and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get it.

That revenge comes in the form of beauty pageants, a world totally unfamiliar to Patty. To help her out in with her grand scheme, Patty recruits Bob Armstrong (Dallas Roberts), a former attorney with a passion for beauty pageants. Bob hopes to turn Patty into a worldwide pageant queen, but Patty’s own ambitions end up getting in the way — it turns out that it’s pretty difficult to focus on pageants when you’re wrapped up in getting even with your high school tormentors. “Patty is out of control,” Bob says in the trailer as Patty skids down the road in her car. Throughout the first season’s twelve episodes, Bob and his wife Coralee (Alyssa Milano) attempt to wrangle Patty’s rage, but time after time, their efforts come up short.

There are a lot of great ways to discuss body image on TV, but a series about a girl who gets skinny because her jaw is wired shut doesn’t seem like the best example of that. Like many of Netflix’s high school-centric series, Insatiable is targeted towards teens, and it’s easy to question what kind of message this revenge fantasy sends. Is it important to address bullying and puberty and body image? Absolutely. Does it seem like Insatiable will do this tactfully? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Season 1 of Insatiable hits Netflix on Friday, August 10. Watch the trailer above.
