‘Star Wars’ Won Comic-Con (At Least On Twitter)

Timeless may have been the big winner heading into this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, but by close on Sunday, July 22, Star Wars had taken the crown. Or rather, the surprising news that animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars would be returning for a final series of episodes on Disney’s forthcoming digital platform made Clone Wars the most tweeted about show for the four official days of this year’s pop culture convention.

In numbers provided to Decider by Twitter, over three million tweets were sent around this year’s Comic-Con from Thursday, July 19 through Sunday. With dozens of big trailers released, hundreds of panels, and hundreds of thousands of attendees, it’s hard to break through the noise that is Comic-Con. But some TV shows (and movies) did just that.

Specifically, The Clone Wars was number one on the list of most tweeted about TV shows. Doctor Who was second, as the BBC introduced their new, female Doctor publicly for the first time; and The Walking Dead, which finally confirmed the news that series star Andrew Lincoln would be leaving the show, was third. Interestingly, Netflix’s reboot of Voltron was number four, as they showed off a new episode.

Timeless, which dominated leading into the Con, and flew a helicopter around trying to save the show, didn’t break the top ten. But another fan favorite, canceled show did: Shadowhunters.

The Freeform supernatural show didn’t have a panel at the convention, but it does have a legion of loyal fans tweeting to #SaveShadowhunters almost constantly. Hence the number five slot on the Twitter list… Though if that’s enough to convince Freeform, or another network to bring the show back for another season, we’ll have to wait and see.

Clockblockers (that’s the fanbase name for Timeless) shouldn’t despair, though. They racked up 118,000 tweets during the convention, which is nothing to sneeze at. Or break time over.

The rest of the list, including the most tweeted about movies, is below:

Update: As some folks have been asking about methodology, Twitter confirmed to Decider that these trends involve multiple iterations of hashtags (for example, #Timeless, #SaveTimeless, #TimelessSDCC etc.) using a robust list of terms and standard tracking tools. However, these are in conjunction with the main Comic-Con terms (#SDCC, #ComicCon, etc.) for tracking purposes.
