Hillary Clinton is taking a page out of Donald Trump’s book: the former presidential candidate is getting back into the TV game with an appearance on the CBS drama Madam Secretary. Clinton will appear alongside fellow secretaries of state Madeline Albright and General Colin Powell in the Season 5 premiere, an episode that will feature the show’s fictional cabinet secretary, Elizabeth McCord (Téa Leoni), turning to her predecessors for advice on a sensitive issue. According to CBS, Clinton, Albright, and Powell filmed their scenes together on Wednesday, July 11, one of the first days of production on Season 5.
In the episode, Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord turns to the former dealmakers “to ask their advice on how to respond to a delicate situation.” Perhaps a foreign power has infiltrated the United States’ election system and is manipulating results for their own gain? Maybe the president is gearing up to start a trade war with the European Union? Are two global powers on the brink of nuclear war? Who knows what totally fictional, completely unrealistic “delicate situation” will plague Elizabeth McCord in Madam Secretary Season 5.
No matter the issue at hand, Clinton, Albright, and Powell are more than equipped to weigh in. Each served for four years as Secretary of State: Albright, the first woman to hold the office, from 1997 to 2001 under President Bill Clinton; General Powell from 2001 to 2005 under President George Bush; and Clinton from 2009 to 2013 under President Barack Obama.
“We’re delighted to have these three former secretaries of state be part of our season premiere,” said Madam Secretary creator Barbara Hall. “It was a privilege to experience their perspectives and discourse both in and behind the scenes.” Executive producer Lori McCreary added, “Having three powerhouses of diplomacy agree to come on our show is awe-inspiring and humbling.”
The Madam Secretary Season 5 premiere will air Sunday, October 7 on CBS.
