Netflix Is Adding Over 100 New Profile Icons

Get ready for your Netflix to look different in a good way. Today the streaming service announced that new profile icons will be coming to the streaming service. Soon you’ll be able to customize your account with photos of your favorite characters.

As announced in a press release from the company, this change coincides with the five-year anniversary of Netflix profiles. That’s the handy feature that ensures your brother’s endless anime binges don’t mess with your crime drama algorithm. Currently, every Netflix account can have up to five profiles. Each profile can be customized with one of 13 profile images. But under this new change, users will have over 100 new icons to choose from, including several featuring characters like Luke Cage from his Netflix show, Crazy Eyes from Orange Is the New Black, and Steve from Stranger Things. The new profile icon options will be rolling out to different users in the coming weeks.

It’s a silly little detail, but speaking as someone who has wasted too many hours creating Sims, it’s a fun one. Customizing online profiles is a joyous experience, one that lets you see how your friends and loved ones see themselves. For example, my father currently has an angry orange chicken as his Netflix profile icon. I’m not exactly sure what that tells me about him, but it feels important.

I can’t wait to switch my profile to a depressed BoJack or Joel McHale in front of a too-green square. But why stop there? Why not gameify watching shows like gaming consoles do? That way when I inevitably waste a Saturday buried in blankets pressing “Next” on Ozark episodes, I can feel like I’m accomplishing something.
