New Netflix Icons Exclude ‘The Ranch,’ ‘The Crown,’ and More

To celebrate the five-year anniversary of Netflix introducing the profiles feature, the streaming service rolled out over 100 new icons for users to choose from when personalizing their Netflix home base. Instead of being a three-eyed alien or a curious raccoon or a mustachioed dude in aviator sunglasses, Netflix users will be able to choose from updated versions of those original characters (there’s so much shine to those aviators!) and a ton of actual characters from Netflix original shows.

I jumped on this feature as soon as I noticed it was available. Even though I have a mustache IRL, I never felt super represented by my little sunglasses-wearing face-guy. I’m big on recognizable characters, and I always have been (no off-brand G.I. Joes for this kid!). So obviously I switched out my icon to that of my favorite Marvel non-X-Men hero, Daredevil. And my husband? He’s definitely a Titus from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. I feel like Netflix finally sees who we are!

Scrolling through the options, you’ll see icons from Marvel’s The Defenders, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Queer Eye, Orange is the New Black, Lost in Space, One Day at a Time, Dear White People, Fuller House, Stranger Things, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Big Mouth, House of Cards, Money Heist, Voltron: Legendary Defender, Alexa & Katie, Bright, Trollhunters, Okja, B: The Beginning, Spirit Riding Free, Project MC2, Skylanders Academy, Super Monsters, and True and the Rainbow Kingdom.

A lot of these are no-brainers. Obviously Queer Eye is gonna be a popular choice (get ready to start judging your friends and family by which Fab Five member they pick!). There are plenty of kid-friendly options, to go along with Netflix’s large library of kid content. Formative shows like Orange is the New Black and House of Cards are there (but noticeably no Kevin Spacey). Two dozen different shows and movies are included, so many that it only makes the shows not included stand out even more!

Let’s talk about the shows that got snubbed! Obviously no one’s surprised that canceled shows like Marco Polo or Bloodline were left out, but there are some truly glaring omissions in this list. Here are the not-canceled Netflix shows with zero icon representation:

  • 3%
  • 13 Reasons Why
  • Aggretsuko

  • F Is for Family
  • Free Rein
  • Friends from College
  • GLOW
  • Grace and Frankie
  • Ingobernable
  • Kulipari: An Army of Frogs

  • Suburra: Blood on Rome
  • SWORDGAI The Animation
  • The Break with Michelle Wolf
  • The Crown
  • The Mechanism
  • The OA
  • The Rain
  • The Ranch

I’m definitely missing a few, because some ended shows (Project MC2) actually did get icons! So I dunno, maybe Netflix should make a little hot pink box with Kyle Chandler in Bloodline in it.

The biggest surprises on that list have to be The Ranch, Ozark, Marvel’s The Punisher, GLOWGrace and Frankie, and The Crown. The Ranch is definitely the most popular show on Netflix, even if no one tweets about it. Ozark and The Crown just scored Netflix a bunch of Emmy nominations. The Punisher is the second most-popular of the Netflix heroes (after Daredevil, this is a fact). GLOW is packed with colorful characters and feels tailor made for this feature. And Grace and Frankie is Netflix’s second longest running comedy after Kimmy Schmidt! Where’s our Jane and Lily icons? We want them, we want them now!

It’s possible Netflix will keep rolling out more icon choices in the coming weeks and months, especially if any new shows take off the way 2018 hits like Queer Eye and Nailed It! have (oh also, where’s our Nicole Byer icon?!). Until then, Netflix might want to beware the wrath of the Ranch-hands that have been snubbed!
