‘Ex Machina’ Is Now Streaming On Netflix

Today, Netflix quietly snuck Ex Machina, Alex Garland‘s indie sci-fi hit, onto the platform, and fans are psyched. The 2014 film tells the story of a young computer coder named Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) who wins a trip to the lavish home of his company’s CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). There, Nathan enlists Caleb to help test his newest project: a humanoid, artificial intelligence named Ava (Alicia Vikander) who seems far too real to be a robot. As Caleb and Ava spend more time together, he begins to question the reality of everything and everyone around him, and eventually, their relationship leads both of them down a path of self-destruction.

Ex Machina was a rip-roaring hit for first-time director Garland. The film grossed $36 million at the box office (on a $15 million budget) and was nominated for practically every award, including a Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe nod for Alicia Vikander and a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nom for Garland. At the 2016 Oscars, Ex Machina won for Best Visual Effects, beating out heavy hitters like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Revenant. Plus, the film solidified Garland as a real-deal science fiction filmmaker. After Ex Machina, the writer/director went on to make Annihilation, which our Joe Reid described as “the best movie of 2018,” and he’s currently working on an FX pilot, Devs.

Before Netflix added Ex Machina to its library, the film was available to stream exclusively on Prime Video under the platform’s overall deal with production company A24. A24’s deal with Prime Video still exists (the company just extended the pact in 2017), but it seems like the exclusivity window on Ex Machina has passed, which is why Netflix was able to grab the streaming rights to the film this month.

Now that Ex Machina is on Netflix, you have no excuse not to watch. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the robot intrigue — and Oscar Isaac’s dance moves.
