Michelle Wolf Brutally Mocks ‘The Staircase’ in New Clip [Exclusive]

If you’re still seething about the hours you’ve wasted fretting over documentary subjects who may or may not have murdered their wives, Michelle Wolf sees you and understands. In an exclusive clip from The Break‘s upcoming episode this Sunday, the talk show proposes a new Netflix docuseries — The Husband Did It. It’s 10 hours long, heavily biased, and has a clear perpetrator: the husband.

The fake docuseries has everything you’s expect from a documentary about domestic murder. There’s a murdered white woman who used to have the “perfect” life and is often shown smiling. The husband accused of murdering her is aggressively strange and barely talks like a normal person. A memorable murder weapon, bungee cords in this case, appears multiple times. The show even nails the annoying prosecuting attorney you’re supposed to agree with and the oddly sympathetic defense attorney you’re supposed to hate. It’s an epic perp docuseries that already knows exactly who committed its central trime. And honestly? I would probably still watch it.

Most of the sketch can be applied to anything that’s appeared on Lifetime, but there are some Staircase-specific jabs. The defense attorney never having all the facts from his client is classic David Rudolf. Likewise, the revelation that the biased documentary fillmmaker was having a relationship with her subject comes straight from the critically-acclaimed miniseries’ backstory. Even the sketch’s title, “The Husband Did It,” is presented as an answer to the question Netflix used to promote The Staircase.

The Break may be known for Wolf’s pointed monologues, but its sketches have become on of the most consistently funny parts of this strong show. Whether Wolf is skewering strong female leads or the New York Times‘ op-ed section, Wolf knows where to punch, and she hits hard. You can watch the scathing takedown of our perverse love of true crime above.
