Amazon’s ‘Forever’ Trailer Takes Maya Rudolph, Fred Armisen on a Sweet, Sinister Stroll

The Pitch: Married couple June (Maya Rudolph) and Oscar (Fred Armisen) live a comfortable but predictable life in suburban Riverside, California. For 12 years they’ve had the same conversations, eaten the same meals and taken pleasant vacations at the same rented lake house. But after June talks Oscar into shaking things up with a ski trip, the pair suddenly find themselves in completely unfamiliar territory.

Why we’re excited: Maya Rudolph? Fred Armisen? The co-creator of Master of None? Seriously, what more do you need? In dependently, Rudolph, Armisen, and Alan Yang all inspire hella confidence. Those are three people you’d follow to any streaming service for any project. Put all of them together and you’ve got the makings of something truly unique, and potentially something groundbreaking for Amazon’s streaming service.

Rudolph and Armisen are two of the most varied performers in Saturday Night Live history, both possessing solid acting chops, off-kilter comedy styles, and lots of musical ability (these are the brains behind the “Prince Show” sketch, remember?). Teaming them up with Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard, two Parks and Recreation writers, is a genius idea. And we all saw what Yang’s partnership with comedian Aziz Ansari yielded in Master of None, the Emmy-winning Netflix series. If Yang and Hubbard are putting these two dynamos into a similarly emotional/hilarious/cathartic series, then we are all for it.

The trailer doesn’t give away much, aside from scrolling through the love life of the lead couple. But things take a super weird turn when Rudolph’s June shows just a bit of hesitation, and we get a bunch of flashes of knives and what even looks like a cult-ish ritual. What’s this series about? Who knows?! All that’s certain is we’ll definitely be along for the ride.
