‘Star Trek: Discovery’s Mini-Episodes: Everything We Know

CBS All Access has big plans for its flagship series, Star Trek: Discovery. After announcing yesterday that Patrick Stewart would be reprising his role as Jean-Luc Picard for a new series for the franchise, the streaming service dove into what we can expect from Season 2 and the previously announced Star Trek: Short Treks at the Television Critics Association‘s 2018 tour. Live long and prosper, Trekkies.

“As we gear up for season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery, we’ll be launching our first expansion of the Star Trek universe with Star Trek: Short Treks,” Julie McNamara, Executive Vice President, Original Content, CBS All Access, said during the streaming service’s panel. “The four episodes will be rolling out monthly beginning this fall and will be stand alone stories each running 10 to 15 minutes.”

So what are those four episodes going to be about? One will focus on con artist, smuggler, and swindler Harry Mudd’s (Rainn Wilson) life and backstory. Wilson will direct his short. Another will see Aldis Hodge (Leverage, Hidden Figures) star as a man named Craft. When he finds himself as the only human on a deserted starship, who knows what horrors he will face?

CBS All Access gave less information about the third and fourth Short Treks, though we have a general idea of what each will be about. “Additional episodes include a deep dive into Saru’s backstory as the first Kelpien to join Star Fleet and Tilly’s friendship with an unlikely stowaway,” McNamara said.

The network also clarified some points about its latest spinoff show. The franchise’s next Star Trek series will be completely centered on Picard. At the moment the Picard series is set to air in the fall of 2019 with Stewart serving as executive producer.

Following the four Short Treks this fall, Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 will return in early 2019. It will then be followed by Jordan Peele, Simon Kinberg, and Marco Ramirez’s Twilight Zone reboot, which is set to premiere early next year. 2019 is shaping up to be an excellent time for genre television.
