The Force isn’t that strong with this one. We’ve known for some time now that Disney is no longer content to let Netflix stream its movies and will be launching an unnamed streaming service of its own to compete, but not every title will be available. As noted by Bloomberg, for instance, Disney unsuccessfully attempted to reacquire the TV rights to Star Wars and the from Turner Broadcasting — meaning Episodes I–VI won’t be available until 2024.
Turner, whose main cable networks are TBS and TNT, can exclusively air the three main trilogies and standalone entries on the small screen and online for another six years. The company “would want financial considerations and programming to replace the lost films,” according to Bloomberg’s sources, and “the talks haven’t advanced further.”
Turner paid around $275 million for the rights to Star Wars in 2016, which was before Disney finished plans for its own streaming service. At Comic-Con in July, the Mouse House announced that The Clone Wars would return for a final season on said service, which remains unnamed.
