Netflix has just dropped a new, full-length trailer for its upcoming limited series Maniac, and it’s creepy AF.
The series, which debuts on September 21, is directed Cary Joji Fukunaga, and stars Emma Stone, a shockingly-skinny Jonah Hill, Justin Theroux and Sally Field in a mind-bending drama about an experimental treatment for psychological problems.
The trailer starts off with Theroux as James Mantelray, in a wig and pair of glasses that might have been swiped from Matthew Rhys’ dressing room at The Americans, questioning two people, Annie Landsberg (Stone) and Owen Milgrim (Hill) about their lives and addictions. “Do you know where you are… right now?” he asks them. “What do you think is wrong with you?” There’s lots of microphones, monitors, and a weird clicking sound.
Landsberg and Milgrim are offered a pill in a drug trial that’s supposed to give them more worthy lives, ones that he can manipulate. But as the trailer shows, the two of them get together to defy the effects of the pill, joining each other in their fantasies to figure out what’s really going on.
It all looks weird and off-putting… but fascinating, all at the same time. We all know how good Fukunaga is at exploring fertile but damaged minds, as we saw during the first season of True Detective. But now the stakes are much higher. This looks like a show that’s going to scoop up a poop-ton of Emmys next year, doesn’t it?
