The Trump-Comey Feud Is Coming To Showtime With Alex Gibney’s ‘Enemies: The President, Justice, & The FBI’

This afternoon, Showtime announced that they’re getting into the political documentary game with Enemies: The President, Justice, & The FBI, a four-part docu-series that takes a deep dive into the long history of conflict between American presidents and the FBI. As it turns out, Trump isn’t the only commander-in-chief to wage war on the FBI; his behavior is part of a larger feud between the two offices that dates back decades, and Showtime’s docu-series aims to present that conflict to the public. Enemies (still a working title) hails from award-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney and is set to premiere on Sunday, November 18, just weeks after the primary elections.

Gibney’s docu-series is based on Tom Weiner’s book Enemies: A History of the FBI. According to Showtime, the series will present “the long, complex history of presidents testing the rule of law and the FBI’s job to enforce it. Yet, this history also reveals the abuse of power is not only reserved for elected politicians. Men of zeal within the bureau, too, have abused their power.” Through interviews with current and former officials and journalists, many of whom were present at these crucial moments in history, Enemies will tell “the story of the epic confrontations between the President and the FBI. From Nixon and Hoover to Trump and Comey, each battle illuminates a different facet of our democracy and the rule of law.”

Each episode may feature a different government skirmish, but Showtime promises that the bulk of the show will focus on the present. The network says that Trump’s presidency will be used “as a prism” through which the filmmakers will “look back to see which lessons held up, which didn’t and how the current investigation of the Trump administration might turn out.”

Gibney is no stranger to politically-minded projects. In early 2018, he released Dirty Money on Netflix, a six-part series that explores the depths of corporate greed, and The Looming Tower on Hulu, a dramatized version of Lawrence Wright’s novel The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11. Gibney is also working on a still-untitled project for HBO about Elizabeth Holmes and the Theranos scandal, a massive fraud cover-up.
