Kanye West Says Liberals Can’t “Bully” Him Out Of Supporting Donald Trump

Last night, Kanye West visited Jimmy Kimmel Live for a quick chat, and, unsurprisingly, things took a turn for the weird (this is Kanye, after all). During an interview that covered everything from Yeezys to philosophy, Kanye addressed his support of Donald Trump, an act that he says comes from a place of “love,” not fear.

According to Kanye, there are “two main motivating forces” in the world: love and fear. The rapper told Kimmel that when he initially came out in support of Trump, people tried to scare him into making a the predictable choice, but he wouldn’t budge. “As a musician, African American, guy out in Hollywood, all these different things, you know, everyone around me tried to pick my candidate for me,” said Kanye. “And then told me every time I said I liked Trump that I couldn’t say it out loud or my career would be over, or I’d get kicked out of the black community — because blacks, we’re supposed to have a monolithic thought, we can only be Democrats.”

Kanye believes that supporting Trump in spite of the harsh criticism meant that he was overcoming his fear of rejection, although he admits that it took some time for him to fully realize this. “It represented overcoming fear and doing what you felt, no matter what anyone said. And saying, ‘You can’t bully me.’ Liberals can’t bully me, news can’t bully me, the hip hop community can’t bully me,” said Kanye.

Kanye may have been open about his support for Trump on a larger scale, but when it came to actual policies — and their tangible consequences — Kimmel tripped him up. At the end of their discussion, Kanye told Kimmel that approaching the president with love will help fix America’s problems, saying, “When I see people just even, like, go at the president, it’s like, why not try love? We can diffuse this nuclear bomb of hate that we’re in as a society by thinking of everyone as our family.”

Kimmel acknowledged that Kanye’s sentiment was “beautiful,” but he insisted that it’s not realistic. “There are literally families being torn apart as a result of what this president is doing. And I think that we cannot forget that, whether we like his personality or not, his actions are really what matter,” Kimmel fired back. He continued, “I mean you so famously and so powerfully said ‘George Bush doesn’t care about black people. It makes me wonder what makes you think that Donald Trump does, or any people, at all?” Kanye didn’t quite seem to know what to say to that, and after a long pause, Kimmel threw him a bone by cutting to commercial. Kanye, you’re off the hook now, but eventually you’ll have to address the very real effects of Trump’s presidency.
